"Design group far from consensus?" How about a more accurate, more relevant headline, like:

"New bridge? Community far from consensus."

Last week, Lou Brancaccio acknowledged his failure to cover the opposition.

I'm not here to say we always get it right. We try to ask the tough questions and hold folks accountable. Something else to consider, there isn't always "equal" opposition on issues. So we often hear "why didn't you quote the other side?" There isn't always another side. If you take school bonds and levies for example there usually is a very organized side in favor of them. Not so much on the other side. So it's not always easy to find the other side. And it's even more difficult to find equal numbers on the other side. There may be hundreds of folks mobilized on the pro side of a school bond. You might be lucky to find one or two on the other side.

I don't know... somehow the phrase "disingenuous" doesn't quite cover it.

ZERO coverage of the opposition is to infer that no opposition exists. Month after month of doing nothing to determine the opposition when, for example, Commissioner Tom Mielke and Senator Don Benton's opposition to this crap is well known.

Hundreds of people from a wide variety of locations on the political spectrum met a couple of weeks ago to protest this massive waste. This one meeting of pro-bridge leg humpers received more coverage.

Bias plays a MASSIVE part in this drama. Saying you CAN'T find opposition when clearly, you've made no effort to LOOK for it, is the quintessential cop out.

Arrogance plays the rest, in that many Federal officials who should know have told these morons that there's no money for their grand designs. Clearly, they're incapable of listening to ANYONE who doesn't share their bizarre vision.

The worthlessness of the article, below, is that the idiots behind this monstrosity are arguing over a crap pile that faces long odds of ever seeing the light of day and that those who are forced to use it do not want.

Without community support, it doesn't matter what this bridge looks like. If it ever is built, it will reflect a governmental tyranny that is a full-blown stain on democracy.

If, as I devoutly hope, no shovel of dirt is EVER turned on this steaming heap, then these morons will have wasted $100 MILLION plus.

Portland mayor wants other bridge options

Design group far from consensus

Bridge planners came to a Friday design meeting seeking consensus on a new Interstate 5 Bridge.

There wasn't much to be found.

Portland Mayor Sam Adams, co-chairman of the Urban Design Advisory Group, said he wants to consider placing cyclists and pedestrians on a path at road level, not tucked underneath one of the two freeways spans.

Several others said they didn't care for the work to date and wanted to be more involved in the design process.

Current planning has focused on two "stacked" bridges, with light-rail tracks under the southbound freeway span and a "world-class" bicycle-pedestrian path under the northbound bridge.

Projections indicate that as many as 1,000 pedestrians and 5,000 cyclists could use the path during a nice summer day in the year 2030.

But Adams said having the path underneath a bridge "was not even close to a world-class option."

Ron Anderson, consultant project manager for the Columbia River Crossing, said placing cyclists and pedestrians next to freeway traffic creates "a very mean environment: road spray conditions, noise, dirt."

Adams said a bicycle-pedestrian path could be separated from freeway traffic to create a pleasant environment.

Mark Masciarotte, who represents the Vancouver Aviation Advisory Committee on the design group, said he would much rather be walking or riding underneath the bridge during the Northwest's rainy weather.

"For six months of the year, it is not pleasant up on that upper deck," he said.

"So we're going to bike to the bridge to get out of the rain?" Adams replied.

"I might get to the point where I can support this," Adams said, "but I get really concerned about a process that leads us to here without looking at other options."

Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard, the design group's other co-chairman, said the bistate panel previously expressed a preference for a stacked option.

"Sometimes I'm not sure what the hell 'world-class' means," Pollard added.

"World-class also means looking at the options," Adams said.

Bridge planners have turned to a stacked design to reduce costs and minimize the project's footprint and eliminate having a third bridge for light-rail trains, pedestrians and cyclists.

But there also are concerns that a stacked option would isolate cyclists and pedestrians and heighten worries about safety and crime, which in turn could discourage use.

Bridge planners say they might be able to place bicycle-pedestrian paths at road level, depending on how much separation would be required from freeway lanes and how wide each path would be.

Peg Johnson, who represents the Jantzen Beach Moorage Association Inc., mentioned the possibility that an underneath path could provide a refuge for homeless people.

"To me, this is a place for people to throw down their newspapers and sleep," she said.

Several group members, most notably Carrie Schilling of Works Partnership Architecture in Portland, said they wanted to be more closely involved as the design work moves ahead.

Adams, noting that "I've got a lot of controversial projects on my plate," said he likes quite a bit of bridge architect Bradley Touchstone's work.

But the Portland mayor, who last week suggested the team that designed a planned light rail-bicycle-pedestrian bridge over the Willamette River might take a crack at the I-5 project, stopped far short of embracing Touchstone's work.

"I've seen Bradley's designs for bridges," he said. "I don't think we've gotten the best out of his yet."

Portland officials have long called for an asymmetrical design that provides for an architectural statement across Portland Harbor, connecting Hayden Island to the rest of the city.

Because of the close proximity of Pearson Field on the Washington side, bridge engineers have little room to play with to make a structure high enough to prevent traffic-choking bridge lifts but low enough not to substantially interfere with the airspace designated for Pearson traffic.

Adams indicated that adding architectural flourishes to the main bridge won't be enough.

"I've stated from the very beginning I wouldn't be bought off with great lighting," he said. "I wouldn't be bought off with mosaics and gargoyles."

Johnson said she believe designers are paying too much attention to where the bridge touches down as the "iconic focal point."

"I like you guys a lot, but I'm not impressed with your bridge," she said.

It was all a bit much too much for Dick Pokornowski, who represents the Vancouver City Center Redevelopment Authority.

"I think at some point we have to move ahead," Pokornowski said. "Right now, I think we're going back. I'm very frustrated."

It's this kind of despicable behavior of lies and deceit that got close-to-pedophile Sam Adams into hot water in the first place.

The local ABC affiliate, KATU TV has documented where the City of Portland has demanded $1.5 MILLION dollars to respond to KATU's public record request.

Here's the article on their website. Even if Adams hadn't been a lying scumbag over his sexual activities with a teenager, that he would countenance this kind of usurious charge for public records is reason enough to kick his lying ass out of office as it is.

So when KATU received a quote of $1.5 million from the city to pull public records from Mayor Sam Adams' office, you can imagine the sticker shock.

It all started weeks ago when the mayor issued a public apology over the scandal involving his relationship with a young intern. During the press conference, KATU requested Adams' phone, calendar and e-mail records from the spring of 2005, when the then city commissioner was developing a relationship with 17-year-old Beau Breedlove.

"I think the Willamette Week and the Oregonian have asked for those already, so they're around already," Adams said.

So a City of Portland Employee Was So Shocked...

about these videos here and here and here and here and here and here and thought I should see them. Sad. I'd seen them before but I keep forgetting others haven't. Kids, these aren't for you. They're videos featuring your city 'leaders,' but they're unfit for most people to watch.

Craig Williams is proof that arrogant, blithering idiots exist in both parties. And, unfortunately he has joined the "Legion of Liars" that support this debacle.

I, for one, am heartily sick of the downtown mafia types who believe their judgement is somehow superior to those they would govern.

Williams, abysmally failed county commissioner candidate, best known for idiotically confirming that Tom Mielke "will lose" the general election for county commissioner (Commissioner Mielke occasionally disappoints in that regard) supports the complete, unjustifiable, unnecessary and unneeded I-5 Bridge replacement, a project that will blow a $4 BILLION hole in transportation funding along with the moronic, how many times do we have to say "NO!" loot rail.

Williams, who claims to be a Republican but has yet to show any adherence to Republican principles, is cut from the mold of "Rex superious," that typically supports the idiocy of corrupt leaders like those doing everything they can to ram this project down this county's throat. He's been busily firing nails into his political coffin, and whenever he does, I'll be there to blog it so succeeding generations may see what a jerk he actually is.

He opposes a vote, does not want to hear from the 60,000 commuters that he would want to nail with a $1200 yearly tax, in addition to the many other taxes commuters have to pay; sucking that estimated $72,000,000 yearly out of our local economy as if that ripple effect will not be felt across the entire retail spectrum.

My suggestion to Mr. Williams is this: If you're going to think, act, exhibit arrogance and ignore the people like Jim Moeller, you would be best served to join his party. As for me, you've joined my short list of political opponents that I will pay money and put personal effort into defeating... no matter what or where you run for office.

So, Williams applauds this colossal waste of 10's of millions of dollars for a completely unneeded replacement of a perfectly serviceable and functional bridge with a preordained study that only had one "acceptable" outcome? A replacement that will suck out transportation dollars for decades from projects that actually DO need work? One wonders why he's doing this. Is he just kissing ass for a job down the road, so to speak?

It requires a very thick skin to work through all the naysayers who ignore the basic financial reality that we are spending more in congestion at the bridge each year than the mortgage on a new bridge will cost, or those who say that we must do X before Y, but only if Y gets done before X.

Clearly, Williams' ability to manipulate figures into whatever he wants them to be is only exceeded by his political abilities. In short, he has become a classic case of figures that don't lie, but liars that do figure.

We need to address many traffic issues and this is an overdue good start. Once plans for the bridge are solidified, it will be easier to focus on other needed I-5 improvements. Portland is currently working on some of the I-5 Delta Park problems so we need to stop being so negative.

It requires complete self-delusion to ignore the basic financial reality of imposing a $1200 per year tax on commuters just so they can go to work. It requires complete idiocy to ignore the experts who tell us that soon after the bridge is completed, it will have made no difference. It requires an unbelievable level of arrogance to suggest that the judgment of the few somehow is superior to the judgment of the many. It require unbelievably large blinders to believe that Oregon's efforts in Delta Park will mean anything to the issues of freight mobility or congestion.

In short, to share Williams' attitude and positions on this matter requires you to be a fan of totalitarian government.

John, I understand your desire for a new bridge but there is no political or engineering support for the idea. It has been looked at and the conclusions have been against the idea each time.

Here, Williams is just a flat-out liar. First, it's clear that he "understands" NOTHING. To suggest that there is "no political support" for a third bridge when Commissioner Mielke was elected on a third bridge platform is just more of the self-serving garbage that bridge proponents typically use.

Again, Williams political ignorance is so great, that he stupidly overlooks the fact that their was only ever going to be ONE outcome from the people MAKING the "conclusions," no matter WHAT the FACTS say.

The outcome from all of these studies was pre-ordained by the downtown Mafia. We have wasted 10's of millions of dollars to reach a point where anyone with a brain in their head (except, it would seem, Mr. Williams) KNEW we would wind up from the getgo.

Engineering "Conclusions" that are based on politics are worthless. Much like, come to think of it, the idea that a 3rd Bridge should be ignored is worthless.

Even if there was some support it would be almost impossible to get all the permits needed to put in a third bridge. It will be hard enough to satisfy all the relevant permit criteria with a replacement bridge.

Bullshit. In Williams twisted world, if we can't get permits to do the right thing, we should get permits to do the wrong thing.

Words fail me in describing the depth of the idiocy of a mind that could possibly conclude that "permits" should determine this bridging issue.

In light of this why keep pushing for it?

When rape is inevitable, relax and enjoy it?

Because it is the right thing to do, Mr. Williams. Because until this horrific waste of money is built, there's always hope that the corruption you represent and embrace will somehow be defeated and government will, for once, do the RIGHT thing.

For practical reasons you gotta know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em. Maybe someday, but it isn't going to happen now so why not work together on this bridge and make it the best we can.

And, of course, the fact is that it would be MUCH cheaper to pay for the needed repairs on the house we ALREADY have, then to build a new one in the same place, particularly when building another one somewhere else would be MUCH cheaper, and result in DOUBLING our living space.

Were paying excessive rent on an old, outdated, unsafe bridge. It saves more money and makes better financial sense (even when you include possible tolls) to build a new bridge and we need to plan now to have it done by 2020.

Somebody else has taken this position before: the President.

He's slammed us with an entire mountain range of debt; debt that we'll be paying for untold generations... and he did so even after the Congressional Budget Office concluded that to do so would actually hurt our economic recovery, yet economic recovery was the excuse he used for doing it.

Here, the experts have concluded that replacing this three-through lane bridge with another three-through lane bridge will make absolutely no difference.

One wonders: Is Williams unaware of this fact? Or like most of the downtown Mafia, does he just not give a damn?

And this is the most rank hypocrisy of all.

Williams, apparently, works in Vancouver. So he is working hard to impose a cost on US that HE doesn't have to pay! But then, the vast majority of those who would impose this $1200 or more tax on us won't have to pay a dime!

During the race for county commissioner I researched the numbers. I took the total congestion hours that the bridge was estimated to reduce and calculated the congestion costs associated with those hours. Then I took the estimated cost of the proposed 12 lane bridge with light rail and calculated the yearly payment over a 30-year term. No smoke or mirrors, the congestion costs associated with the current I-5 bridge are nearly $100 million more per year than the yearly payment on a new $4.5B bridge. The facts dictate my view on the subject.

Since no such facts exist, it's certainly not facts" that have led you into desiring to screw us.

An Open Letter to Portlanders

Dear Portlander,

As you have probably seen in the media, I have been the target of a nasty smear by a would-be political opponent. I will not dignify the substance of this smear by repeating it - if you read the accounts you will see there is no foundation to it. The reason is simple: it is untrue.

The fact is that Adams now acknowledges that the allegations were dead on target. And beyond matters of sexuality, his scummy lies, complete lack of integrity and personal cowardice disqualify this man to hold any elected job.

This kind of ugly politicking may be commonplace in other cities and at the national level, but Portland and Oregon largely has been blessedly free of it. It saddens me that it has been introduced here, and I have faith that Portlanders' rejection of it will mean that this incident is an anomaly.

Which kind of "ugly politicking" is that? The kind where you're held accountable for your actions? Or the kind where you become a lying scumbag when you deny the truth?

About this attempted smear, here is what I want to say.

Here is what you SHOULD have said, you gutless coward:

"It's all true. I apologize. It won't happen again. Now, vote for me, because if you're gonna elect an admitted drug user for president, you shouldn't have any difficulty voting for someone tip-toeing up to the line of engaging in rape of a child, and then lying his ass off to cover it up."

That's what you SHOULD have said.

I have in the past, and I will in the future, respond to people who reach out to me for help and advice. This is especially true when it comes to young people.

I admit it, the voices (for now) calling out for this worm's resignation are much louder than I believed they would be.

Still, the cache Mr. Adams' sexual preference engenders is quite striking.

Local groups depending on city business are, of course, driven by their need for cash far more than their need to require honesty from elected officials.

Steve Holwerda, chairman of the Portland Business Alliance, said in a statement released Saturday that the alliance board had differing views on whether Adams should resign but they agreed it was a critical time for the city and some of its major development projects.

"Whether or not he stays in office should be based on whether he can lead our city effectively and with the integrity that all our citizens deserve," Holwerda said.

Fascinating.

This lying dirtbag has already both proven, and acknowledged, that he is no more possessed of the "integrity that all our citizens deserve" then he is the ability to levitate.

When you're terrified, one has to wonder: what else would this moron have to do to get you to grow a pair and walk the walk?

Obviously, Adams has made the strategic decision that if he hangs in for 6 months, he'd survive a recall and all would be forgiven.

That's probably true, given that Adams is that most precious of leftist jewels; a homosexual democrat mayor.

While I was in error about the yawner effect, I was dead on in my prediction that Adams would not resign, since he lacks any morals, integrity or responsibility to the people he lied to so vilely during the election, and his opponent, whom he trashed like a rented mule.

Adams is despicable in every sense and meaning of that word. He shouldn't be a 5th grade class president, let alone mayor of Portland. But then, since Portland has morphed into the Soviet Socialist Republic, there can be no doubt they have the government they want and deserve.

As always, had Adams been a Republican; his party affiliation would be mentioned every 30 seconds and the howls for his scalp would be massive and unrelenting.

City Commissioner Randy Leonard told The Associated Press he had a phone message from Adams on Sunday morning, saying he had decided to remain in office.

Two other commissioners told The Oregonian newspaper that Adams told them the same thing. The fourth, Amanda Fritz, declined to comment.

Efforts to reach Adams were unsuccessful.

Last week, Adams publicly apologized for lying about his sexual relationship with an 18-year-old man in 2005 as he began his campaign for mayor in 2007.

The young man, Beau Breedlove, has said he did not have sex with the mayor until he was 18, though they met when Breedlove was 17.

Breedlove, now 21, told The Oregonian on Saturday he had kissed Adams twice when he was 17 and welcomed the romantic interest, offering details that contradicted Adams' claim that he told Breedlove he was not interested in a relationship at the time.

But Breedlove repeated his denial there was any sex before he was 18, and said the relationship was consensual and he considered himself an adult even before he turned 18.

Well, here's the jokes. A T-shirt making the local Fox Affiliate and the internet as well as Jay Leno seem to have caught on. "Portland is the only city where an 18 year old can enjoy a Sam Adams."

Unfortunately according to Willamette Week's blog Mayor Sam Adams will be trying to weather the storm and hold his position. Here's what's great about it though. According to WWeek that's reporting City Commissioner Randy Leonard, Sam Adams says he deserving of "Due Process" before he leaves the seat.

Even after the Oregonian reports that according to the kid, him and Sam Adams made out in the a City Hall bathroom (shortly before retreating to a bar across the street) when he was 17 years old. Well I think we all hope that Sam is treated to Due Process and if a crime was committed (regardless of the statute of limitations) the people of Portland might actually stand up to corruption.

I hesitate to ask the question, but his obvious lies about hiring lobbyists to be a part of his Administration makes the question an obvious choice.

That's the problem with Mr. Obama's lies and promises. Anyone watching this guy during the campaign new he was lying... that he's not a god nor a magician, and that he simply could not do, could not accomplish, could not even come close to achieving what he promised us.

But this... this is an out and out lie. Is this what we have to expect from him until he's indicted?

If he's going to lie to us as a matter of policy, then why should anyone in the foreign policy realm believe anything this empty suit has to say?

It's one thing to lie when you have to. But joining with the likes of Portland Mayor Sam Adams and lying pathologically?

It's going to be a bumpy ride.



Obama flashes irritation in press room visit

President Obama made a surprise visit to the White House press corps Thursday night, but got agitated when he was faced with a substantive question.

Asked how he could reconcile a strict ban on lobbyists in his administration with a Deputy Defense Secretary nominee who lobbied for Raytheon, Obama interrupted with a knowing smile on his face.

"Ahh, see," he said, "I came down here to visit. See this is what happens. I can't end up visiting with you guys and shaking hands if I'm going to get grilled every time I come down here."

Pressed further by the Politico reporter about his Pentagon nominee, William J. Lynn III, Obama turned more serious, putting his hand on the reporter's shoulder and staring him in the eye.

"Alright, come on" he said, with obvious irritation in his voice. "We will be having a press conference at which time you can feel free to [ask] questions. Right now, I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself to you guys - that's all I was trying to do."

The president was quickly saved by a cameraman in the room who called out: “I’d like to say it one more time: ‘Mr. President.’ ”

So, newly-elected DEMOCRAT Portland Mayor Sam Adams had a sexual relationship with a teenager.

That probably won’t make any difference to the idiots that voted for him. After all, as he takes his rightful place as the chief hedonist of Sodom-on-the-Willamette, that sort of thing is just par for his particular course.

Adams is a coward, both politically and morally. He’s not, finally, admitting to his perversion because it’s the right thing to do; no, that’s simply not possible. Instead, he’s fessin’ up because the Willamette Weekly has nailed him.

Had Mr. Adams been possessed of character, he would have told the truth before the election. But like most democrats striving to reach the bar lowered by Bill Clinton, that must depend on what your definition of “is,” is.

Mr. Adams must resign. Lying by omission, even if not technically illegal, provides him with no excuse.

He is not scum because he’s a promiscuous homosexual; that truly IS his business. What makes him scum is that he’s so PROUD of the fact that he nails other men, apparently even those just barely legal. And that, dear reader, is the kind of conduct that would INSTANTLY destroy a heterosexual politician, or even a politician with bisexual leanings… like Republican Congressman Mark Foley… and his democrat replacement who would, apparently, have sex with about anything that moved.

There will be few calls for his resignation. The double-standard is firmly in place, and homosexual politicians could, effectively, molest a Boy Scout troop and the MSM wouldn’t bat an eyelash… because, for their side, it’s ALWAYS “different.”

Adams should go, and do it right now. But he’s already proven he lacks the guts to do the right thing in the past… why would anyone believe he’d suddenly transform into a moral individual with something approaching character now?

And, in this article, note once again the absence from either the Columbian OR the Associated Press any mention of Adams' party affiliation... and ponder, again, if you will, the fact that had Adams been a Republican, that affiliation would have been in every other word in the article.



Portland mayor admits past relationship with teen

More than a year after denying it, the newly elected mayor of Portland has admitted having a sexual relationship with a male teenager in 2005.

Sam Adams, who is openly gay, acknowledged the relationship in a statement Monday, after the Willamette Week newspaper broke the story on its Web site.

In Washington, D.C., for the inauguration, Adams will cut his trip short to issue a public apology Tuesday afternoon in Portland, said Wade Nkrumah, his spokesman.

Adams, 45, said he and the teen were together in the summer of 2005, shortly after the teenager turned 18 in June, and when Adams was a city commissioner. The revelations come nearly a year and a half after Adams and the teen said rumors of a sexual relationship between them were false.
