I was opposed to that rip off then... and I'm opposed to it now.
It showed the Nazi/Taliban tendencies of the thugs on the Vancouver Soviet's city council at the time, not that they're any different now... including uber-fuhrer "No Choice" Royce Pollard, who led the effort to screw the citizens of Clark County generally and Vancouver specifically on the Pollard Hilton.
Of course, the revisionist at the daily democrat neglected to mention the City's lawsuit against the voters to get this pig built... silencing them so they could not vote on this idiocy. But then, ol' Katie ain't from here and may just be too ignorant to know about what it took to get this embarrassment put together.
And along with that, they fail to point out that the taxpayers have wasted millions over the years... including THIS year... $2.75 million this year alone, to be precise...on a wreck that has yet to survive one year without massive taxpayer subsidies of money that could have gone somewhere for something actually useful.
In short, as anyone paying attention knew at the time, this pig has not and likely never would make a profit. Ten years later, that conclusion remains correct: without massive subsidies, it would have been forced to go broke shortly after it opened.
Fringe-leftist nutjobs like the clown who commented under the article either fail to understand or don't care about the dictatorial methods No Choice used to ram this crap pile down our throats.
And Mussolini made the trains run on time, idiot.
The "No Party" (of which I am a proud member) is usually right. We were right then when this stupidly was stuffed down our throats, and we're right now, after millions of our dollars have been wasted to benefit the very few... and ain't it always the way around here?
This stain on democracy was an embarrassment to the very idea of representative government, because instead of seeking the approval of the people of this community to waste these millions, this city actually SUED the constituency into silence... to keep them away from the polls.
And these scum think that's something to be proud of?
The lie about the "estimate" (*I* estimate that they COST the local economy millions) justifies nothing.
This was essentially the same rip off of an idea that led to the horrific ballpark scam that was finally shut down when the people made it clear to a level that even Marc Boldt couldn't ignore that we were not having any of it. Remember the idiotic "$200 million" figure CRUDEC (The same CRUDEC sending someone to Paris on OUR money) shoved out there to justify that scam?
That this blood-sucking, taxpayer subsidized pig is still open is a testimony to the resilience of the taxpayers. It is among the very worst projects in the region's political history, perhaps second only to the CRC/Loot Rail scam. It is absolutely nothing to be proud of and I go out of my way to stay out of it... much like I go out of my way to keep both me... and my wallet... out of Vancouver.
Screwing the people is no great accomplishment. The better accomplishment is when the people find a way to avoid it. And this has... unfortunately, got enough screws in it to fill a hardware store.
It likely makes the downtown mafia all warm and fuzzy as they head over to their bar they had built for their daily alcohol. But then, I ponder all the other ways the city screws so many not on the "friend's list" (Right, Elie?) and express surprise to myself that someone hasn't spray painted that place "Pollard Purple."

The No Party (those opposed to any progress) opposed this. They liked the locomotive in the park and the generally digraceful[sic] look of the square. Now we have s convention center and full service hotel. Both parties have had occasions there, speakers abd[sic] conferences. The same No Party opposed restoration of officers row, opposed and blocked a new library -etc.Reply ·
