One of the many issues that confronted our community which ultimately showed how worthless CRUDEC, the Chamber of Horrors and the democratian actually are was their rabid support for the idiotic ballpark scam.
There never was any possibility it would get built: the very idea of fining the population of an entire county by taxing tickets to movies, the fair, or even to play golf to pay for that rip off was sheer idiocy.
The only aspect even more moronic was locating it in downtown Vancouver Soviet instead of at the fair grounds where access and parking were already located.
CRUDEC lied about the economic impacts after receiving a hefty check from the owners: the Chamber got behind it in a big way but Kelly Parker had been lying so long about the CRC Scam that all of their support hurt more than helped, and, of course, Lefty Lou's hypocritical flip, year over year, showed the situational ethics the man is known for.
The team moved on from where they weren't wanted under the circumstances, and set up shop in a bigger facility in Hillsboro, Oregon for a lot less money and without jacking the entire county... or, for that matter, the entire city of Hillsboro, instead adding a charge to the ticket price to pay for the facility.
Having been to the complex many times, having seen a much cheaper, larger ballpark getting built in a community that wanted it without getting screwed in the process, the Hops are both an organization and team that I have gotten behind.
Imagine: a little burg like Hillsboro could figure out how to get it done while the big city slickers looked like the 3 Stooges on smack in comparison. And to this day, I still respect, acknowledge and admire the decision that then-commissioner Marc Boldt made to finally kill the deal. Although he should have acted much, much sooner, in this case, better late than never.
So, the Yakima Bears became the Hillsboro Hops. They open on June 13 against Everett at 7:05 p.m.
I'm going this season and I'll keep you posted as to their progress.
Now, if only the CRC Scammers had learned from their mistake on the Ballpark Scam...
