Congressman Brian Baird, D-Vancouver, wants to create a nationwide system for tracking people convicted of child abuse or under investigation for child abuse.
Baird folded an amendment into the Children's Safety Act of 2005 ordering Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez to investigate the feasibility of creating a nationwide tracking system. The House passed the Children's Safety Act, which seeks to improve the national sex offender registration program, by a 371-52 vote Wednesday.
"Protecting the safety of our children is a top priority for me," Baird said in a statement. "A national child abuse registry will help law enforcement, parents, and school administrators track abusers and prevent them from relocating to avoid prosecution and punishment."
