So, yesterday wasn't quite the Apocalypse Teddy Wheeler said it would be: does he wish he could take his 1st Amendment attack back?

As we all know by now, the left hates freedom of speech when anyone to the right of Mao cares to practice it.

Leftists riot on college campuses across the country when anyone not a card-carrying communist is booked to speak:  Who can forget the riot at my alma mater in the Seattle Soviet where those supporting free speech were beaten and one was shot at an event by Milo Yiannopoulos outside Kane Hall on Red Square... or the near civil war in Berkeley?

So a Bernie supporter slaughters 2 people on the Max while severely wounding another (Makes you want to bring loot rail in here all the more, doesn't it?) and the result, inexplicably, is that the Mayor Of the Portland Soviet demands that the federal permit for the free speech protest be pulled... by the federal government.

As already shown here, even the ACLU.... hardly a conservative bastion... slapped Teddy around for that one.

It is astounding that an elected official would be so bent on using the Constitution of the United States as his own personal roll of toilet paper to join with every other leftist out there to silence viewpoints and perspectives they don't happen to agree with.

Yet, that's precisely what Teddy attempted... and failed... to do.

Fast forward to Sunday.

The free speech protest went off without a hitch.  Hundreds (thousands?) of the leftist winged monkeys coalesced around the protest but were, for the most part, kept separated from those exercising their rights to assemble and to speak... while many of those same leftists brought weapons which were obviously intended to cause those same free speechers harm.

Either way, the only thing Teddy's hissy-fit and efforts to suspend the constitutional ability of people who had every right to peaceably assemble in the public square and speak their minds... collectively and individually... actually accomplished was to dramatically increase media attention of the event in question.

In the political realm, there's a magnifier those with a message eagerly seek.  It's referred to as "earned media," as opposed to "paid media."

And Teddy handed those he despised a fantastic opportunity that expanded their reach geometrically over what it would have been had he just kept his mouth shut.

Wheeler isn't new to politics.  His attack on the rights of people to speak is inexplicable.  It was an affront to his own police department that, when properly led, has shown itself to be supremely capable of handling this situations.

I look at all of this and just shake my head at the stupidity of this particular own-goal.

Had Wheeler just came out and expressed his condolences to the victims and their families... like I'm sure he does to EVERY murder victim's families, and not just those with a political connotation attached... and then asked everyone to remain calm during these lawful demonstrations.. he would have begun the process of burnishing his statesmanship cred.

Instead, it was leftist bread and circuses.
"I think Wheeler knows what Portland is. Portland is the mob. Conjure constitutional attacks on those the left disagrees with for them and they'll be distracted. Take away the freedom of those with a different view and still they'll roar. The beating heart of Portland is not the US Constitution, it's the damage caused by leftist protesters. He'll bring them anarchist riots - and they will love him for it."
(With apologies to David Franzoni)

Maybe next time, he'll use his head... and not be persuaded that a nazi mentality when it comes to the rights of others is the way to go.

But I'm not going to hold my breath.
