OLYMPIA, Wash. – Some Washington welfare recipients are withdrawing cash at
out-of-state liquor stores, smoke shops and even strip clubs. That’s the finding
of a public radio investigation into welfare debit card use outside Washington’s
borders. The finding comes at a time when the state’s welfare program is $82
million in the red.

The Safari Showclub bills itself as Portland’s finest Rock N Roll strip club.
Manager Paul Le says there are plenty of ways to spend your hard earned
cash.

Paul Le: “Tip the dancers, get lap dances, gamble, video poker.”

Need some cash? The Safari conveniently has an ATM machine on-site. And
that’s where this September a Washington welfare debit card was used to withdraw
money. Now there’s no proof that cash was actually spent inside the Safari Club.
But manager Paul Le admits it doesn’t look good.

Paul Le: “I’m appalled that somebody would get state dollars to help them out
and would spend that kind of money in that way. That money’s supposed to go to
help them and their family.”

More:

As for me, I'd be very big on requiring welfare recipients to undergo random drug/alcohol/nicotine tests.

Because if they can afford those items, then they don't need to be subsidized by my tax dollars.

Hey Kelly, not sure if you saw this but the AP is repsoting that Payroll cuts are worrying Social security advocates.

You might want to take an interesting read of this. It is quite long though.

This is a tough one.

On one hand, we can't have the program fail. On the other, it seems more and more like an empty promise... a big jar of candy that government simply cannot keep it's meat hooks off of... and as one who is looking at SS ten years from now, I've got to wonder if it's going to be there regardless of a temporary cut like this one...

Whatever the outcome of this situation, I don't have a great deal of confidence in social security... all I know is I'm paying it.
