Didn't see this on the sports segment of the news around here last night:
Video: Washington Huskies runner overtakes prematurely celebrating Oregon Duck at finish line
As he approached the finish line in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase Saturday, University of Oregon track and field senior Tanguy Pepiot looked around, didn’t see anyone and thought he had to be alone.
He was wrong.
With the Ducks competing against athletes from Washington and Kentucky at the Pepsi Team Invitational, Pepiot had taken what he assumed to be an insurmountable lead in front of cheering fans at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
He began celebrating, waving his arm in an attempt to get the crowd to make even more noise for the native of Besancon, France, as he crossed the finish line. But Pepiot never noticed UW junior Meron Simon, who was still in hot pursuit.
As Pepiot approached the finish line and slowed down, Simon sped up and overtook Pepiot just inches before the finish line to earn a win in his first steeplechase race in three years.
Simon ended up taking the race by one-tenth of a second over Pepiot, crossing the line in 8:57.86, 15 seconds better than his previous record in the event. Pepiot finished in 8:57.96.
You can watch the video, which was posted on YouTube by Simon’s teammate Aaron Nelson, below. The runners cross the finish line at about the eight-second mark.
