State Rep. Anne Rivers, flanked by then-Sen. Joseph Zarelli, left, and state Rep. Ed Orcutt, speaks at a town hall meeting in Battle Ground in February. In a unanimous decision, Clark and Cowlitz county commissioners this afternoon appointed state Rep. Ann Rivers, R-La Center, as the interim replacement of Joseph Zarelli, who resigned from the state Senate on May 31.
Zarelli, R-Ridgefield, announced on May 18 that he would not run for re-election. Less than two weeks later, he announced his resignation and said that Rivers is the obvious choice for the interim appointment.
The appointee picked by commissioners will serve in office until December, when the senator selected by voters in November's general election will take the helm. Rivers is running in that race against Democrat Ralph Schmidt.
