I was stunned and surprised to read the following comment from Peter VanNortwick, Clark County Assessor-Elect on the upcoming pay and benefit increases for county officials:
County commissioners’ salaries, car allowances to go up
I got a raise? Are you kidding me? I am replacing a 100K+ Deputy Assessor, trying to stop the County paying 6 months of health insurance to him. I agreed to moving GIS to a central function to save money. I am refusing to take part in the retirement system because of the drain on our taxpayers. I have decided to delayed[sic] the hiring of open positions to cut costs.
I didn't make these moves to have the savings go for salary raises for me and my fellow elected officials.
As a taxpayer I don't like this at all. Our county is hurting right now and this isn't the time for raises.

Peter is displaying the leadership and situational awareness that ALL elected officials should show.
I voted for the right one when I marked the block next to your name on my ballot.
And now, you've set the example: will the rest be men enough to follow it?
