Anyone care to explain how we apparently have stationed Navy assets in Syria... and Iran?

Ran across this little tidbit from a Navy blogger I've been following for years, cdr. salamander:

Hey Skipper, about para H ...

You're a reservist, you say. Need a little active duty time, you say. You're a patriot and want to do your share in the Long War, you say. You get an email titled, "Mobilization Opportunity for a 105x (O-5) in AFGHANISTAN (NE-1670-0001)" to your home email address and think .... hmmmmmm ....

You're a reader, so you read. You get to para H ...
H. Mission Description: NAVY REPRESENTATIVE TO COMMANDERS AND STAFFS OF ALL UNITS IN AFGHANISTAN. THE AOIC OF THE NAVCENT DETACHMENT AFGHANISTAN REPORTS TO THE OIC AND HANDLES MANNING ISSUES SUCH AS PAY, PERSONNEL, ADMIN AND LOGISTIC SUPPORT BETWEEN AFGHANISTAN UNITS AND CUSNC STAFFS. THIS DETACHMENT WILL ALSO ASSIST, AS NEEDED, WITH ANY PERSONNEL ASSOCIATED ISSUES FROM NAVY PERSONNEL ASSIGNED IN SYRIA, LEBANON, JORDAN AND IRAN, INCLUDING THE COUNTING OF ALL NAVY PERSONNEL VIA DTAS OR ANY OTHER MEANS AVAILABLE.
Syria ... Iran; who didn't get the memo? Either someone isn't reading the paper very much, or isn't doing a very good job keeping the wall between RED and GREEN properly. I vote for the first.

That, or in the finest traditions of the Naval service, we are just putting everything out there just because, just because.
HHhhmmmm.  "Assigned in SYRIA... and IRAN."

Who knew?
