A federal judge Tuesday fined the Longview-based longshore union about $65,000 for blocking a train bound for the EGT grain terminal at the Port of Longview on Sept. 21.
Coupled with a previous $250,000 fine related to the union's dispute with EGT, the union now faces fines totaling $315,000.
U.S. District Court Judge Ronald B. Leighton Tuesday said the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 21 violated a civil restraining order barring them from blocking train tracks.
The National Labor Relations Board, which sought the federal injunction, asked for about $72,000, which would cover attorney fees, damages to EGT and law enforcement labor costs for sheriff's deputies from Cowlitz, Thurston and Lewis counties and the Longview Police Department.
On Sept. 21, a dozen protesters were arrested blocking the train and scuffling with police. Three of the protesters were Local 21 leaders: President Dan Coffman, Executive Board Member Kelly Muller and Secretary Byron Jacobs. Muller and Jacobs were both charged with felonies for allegedly assaulting police.
ILWU attorneys have already appealed a $250,000 fine that Leighton imposed Sept. 30 for union actions at the terminal Sept. 7 and 8.
