Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley was one of the most critical voices on the Senate Floor during debate over the deficit reduction deal. "This deal does damage to jobs and contributes to the gathering storm in 2012 threatening to take us back into a double dip recession. "  Merkley says the cuts are unfair to the middle class. "While our children in Head Start and going to college and those getting job training are taking a real blow, the wealthy and well-connected don't contribute one single dime." Merkley also accused some on the far right of extortionist and hostage taking tactics.

Senator Ron Wyden did not speak during the debate but voted yes, saying in a statement that while he found many problems with the deal, he could not vote no and let the country default on its obligations. The bill easily cleared the Senate by a 74-26 vote and will be signed into law by President Obama.
