Marxists were a much bigger problem in 1948 than they are now. There were actual Marxists in Roosevelt's Cabinet, the Soviet Union had been around going on 50 years, and Mao had just taken control of China. The Depression, War II, unions - folks in 1948 were highly sophisticated in the ways of collectivism.
Unfortunately today, unless you're 50+ years old, people don't remember. Marxists hide behind the Progressive label, and kids today have no reminder of how bad communism is.
That cartoon is accurate but is was only reflecting the times. After that, tax rates went over 90%, there was The Great Society, the rise of the Middle Class, Liberalism, and we came back from the brink of Marxism. However, again the wealth differential is as big again as it was just before the Depression, and 30-year olds haven't been able to start careers because "Free" Trade had taken all the jobs. The ingredients of Marxism are back.
